nature's spotlight

October 4, 2015

This image is from Avatar Grove, a dense old-growth forest found near Port Renfrew on the southern tip of Vancouver Island . Along the Gordon River, in hilly terrain, you will find a collection of giant western red cedars, Douglas fir and Sitka spruce  that have somehow escaped logging activities over the past century. These trees are 500+ years old.

Sunlight barely penetrates through the thick canopy to hit the forest floor, which is covered with a chaotic jumble of fallen wood, deer fern and red huckleberry. Here we have a young tree surrounded by its towering neighbours lit by sunlight as if to say, "Here I am."
